Planning Your Wedding Ceremony: What to Ask Your Celebrant
Guest blog post by Heidi Robertson, local Byron Bay Wedding Celebrant

Planning a wedding in the Byron Bay hinterland and wondering what questions to ask your wedding celebrant?
I’m Heidi Robertson, a local wedding celebrant based in Byron Bay, and I’ve had the honour of officiating ceremonies all across the Northern Rivers, including here at Aurora House. With over 14 years’ experience as a celebrant and MC, I’ve seen just how important it is to choose the right celebrant—someone who understands your vision, your story, and how to make that come to life in your ceremony.
So, how do you find that person? And what should you be asking them before you lock them in?
Why the Wedding Celebrant Matters More Than You Think
Let’s be real. You’ve probably spent time dreaming about your dress or suit, your reception styling, or how the food will taste. But have you imagined the moment you stand across from your partner and say your vows?
That’s the heart of the day—and your celebrant is right there with you, helping to guide that moment.
The celebrant isn’t just the person who says the legal words and signs the papers. A good celebrant will:
-
Support you through the planning process
-
Help you navigate all the legal requirements
-
Craft a custom ceremony that reflects your values, humour and love story
-
Set the tone for the whole day—from heartfelt to hilarious (or both!)
At venues like Aurora House, which are known for their intimate, relaxed and scenic weddings, having a celebrant who matches the energy of the space is key to creating an unforgettable experience. That’s why we have 3 in- house celebrants that are professional, experienced and warm- and each with their own ceremony style so you can choose what suits you best!
Top Questions to Ask Your Wedding Celebrant Before Booking
1. Are you available on our date?
Start with the basics! Good celebrants book out months (sometimes years) in advance—so always check their availability first.
2. Are you a civil or religious celebrant?
If you’re planning a non-religious ceremony (as many couples are), you’ll want a civil celebrant like myself. If you’re not sure, just ask—we don’t bite! You can check out a full list of all authorised celebrants, both religious and non-religious, on the Attorney General’s website here.
3. Can we meet first?
Absolutely. Most celebrants offer a no-obligation chat—in person or online—so you can get a feel for their vibe. This is a big relationship—you want to click!
4. What’s your ceremony style?
Some celebrants are super formal. Others are relaxed, quirky, light-hearted, sentimental, or a combo. Ask how they’d describe themselves and check out any videos or reviews to get a sense of their delivery.
5. Will you write a personalised ceremony for us?
This is a big one. Your ceremony should feel like you, not a generic script. Ask about their process for writing it and how involved you can be.
6. Do you offer help with vow writing?
Many celebrants (myself included) offer examples, templates, or even one-on-one help with crafting vows that feel authentic and comfortable to say out loud.
7. Do you offer ceremony alternatives?
From including pets and children to skipping awkward traditions or adding creative rituals, a great celebrant will offer ideas that align with your values and comfort level.
8. Do you offer rehearsals?
Some couples love a practice run. If you’re getting married with me at Aurora House, your rehearsal is all part of the experience at no extra cost.
9. Do you charge travel fees?
Make sure you know if travel costs are included, especially if your venue is off the beaten path (though Aurora House is wonderfully accessible!)
10. What’s your fee, and what’s included?
Ask about pricing, what’s covered, and whether there are any add-ons like vow support, PA systems, or travel. Don’t just choose the cheapest option—choose the celebrant who gets you.
Why the Right Celebrant Makes a Big Difference
Your wedding ceremony sets the tone for the entire day. A confident, connected celebrant will keep your guests engaged, tell your story with heart, and make the moment feel like yours.
And when you’re getting married in a setting as beautiful and serene as Aurora House, you want every part of the day to live up to the surroundings.
